DISCOVERING YOUR VOICE IN SKIES & WATER

with Amanda Houston

March 18-20, 2023, 10AM – 5PM. This three-day workshop will go beyond the “how-to” steps of creating radiant sky paintings from photographs. It will explore the intuitive creative process while still covering the foundation of good design and composition. We will focus on a series of small-scale color sketches and finish with one larger piece. While Amanda will share how she approaches skies, this workshop is for you to explore your own mark-making and undergo a deeper self-discovery to define your own unique painting style. Learn what habits holds you back so your true voice can come out. Amanda will demonstrate in pastel but any medium is welcome. Cost is $425.

Saturday-Sunday, February 18-19, 2023, 9AM – 4PM. If you have the desire to master painting in oils but have doubts because you fear the process is too complicated, then join us for this workshop. This will be an immersive weekend, covering the essentials that will include composition, color mixing, shape simplification, value structure, handling of edges and mark-making. Each day of the workshop will consist of a morning presentation and demonstration, followed by hands-on painting in the afternoons, with plenty of instructor assistance at the easels.

Cost: The Sagebrushers member fee is $160; the non-member fee is $185.

All required materials will be available from the instructors for $15, to be paid with the registration. Those registrants with their own materials will receive a recommended supply list.

About the Artists: Michael Wise (mikewiseart.com) lives in Bend, Oregon, where he combines running a chiropractic clinic with his interest in painting. As a painter his interests lies in creating lush landscapes with dramatic lighting. His approach is to create rich sculptural passages of paint, preferring oils applied with stiff brushes and palette knife. His work leans towards representational impressionism created on an abstract design.

Katherine Taylor (https://www.katherine-taylor.com) is a central Oregon oil painter whose signature style employs the dramatic lighting and luminous glazing of the Old Masters. Taylor spent time studying art and architecture in Italy and came away very influenced by the Baroque preference for chiaroscuro (strong contrast of lights and darks); her work has been described as 'soulful' and 'luminous.'
