Composition Boot Camp for Oil and Pastel

A three day workshop with Barbara Jaenicke

May 21-23, 2022, 10am-5pm

Composition is one of the most difficult skills for an artist to learn, However it’s often one of the least practiced and studied skills. The composition approach we’ll practice in this workshop goes way beyond simply finding a focal point or minding the rules of thirds. It will also help you learn to simplify and edit your landscape paintings.

The focus of this workshop will NOT be on finished paintings; it will be on the “bones” of the painting. Expect to do lots of thumbnails and block-ins. The goal will be to train your brain to think in term of shapes and proportions rather than merely recording literal subject matter. These skills will also improve your ability to select strong subjects to paint.

On day three of the workshop, we will allow time for taking one or two of your “starts” to a more completed stage so you can see how a painting progresses more easily with a strong start. Cost for the three day workshop is $400.

Abstracting the Still Life: From Drawing to Painting

A Two-Day Workshop with Ken Marunowski

Saturday & Sunday, May 28-29, 2022, 9AM - 4PM

Join local artist Ken Marunowski for this two-day workshop focused on abstracting the still life. In it, participants will explore processes that help them move from accuracy to abstraction. Drawing, with the incremental addition of color, will facilitate this movement, eventually resulting in full color studies. The presentation and discussion of masterworks will also aid our understanding of the abstract still life as depicted by artists such as Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso and Hans Hofmann. Each day will be divided into two sessions with a specific focus. Sessions will begin with a presentation, continue with an extended drawing session, and end with a review of work produced. Participants will engage in serious looking and analysis of the still life and will generate multiple studies from it, all of which will assist our pursuit of abstraction. This workshop will use acrylic paints, with all materials provided: artists who work in other media are welcome!

The two-day workshop cost is $285 for Sagebrushers Art Society members and $310 for non-members. Vaccinations and masks required. To register, send your name, phone number, and email address to Barbara Crislip at barbjc45@yahoo.com or call 530.209.3492. Instructions for mailing your payment will be given at that time. Registration deadline: Saturday, May 7, 2022.
